Apple Inc said on Friday it will delay its proposed child safety features and collect more feedback as the company faced criticism of the feature over privacy of the users.
Last month, Apple announced child safety features including checking U.S. customers’ phones and computers for child sex abuse images.
The criticism around the feature is that it can be used by governments for censorship or arrests and would invade users’ privacy.
Apple, after facing criticism on the feature, decided to take more time and make some changes to the system.
Based on feedback from customers, advocacy groups, researchers and others, we have decided to take additional time over the coming months to collect input and make improvements before releasing these critically important child safety features, the company said in a statement on Friday.
Apple had been defending the feature for weeks and had also offered documents showing low risks of false detections.
Apple had planned to launch the feature for iPhones, iPads, and Mac with software updates in U.S. later this year.
