AMC Theatres crossed pre-pandemic attendance for the first time on Labor Day weekend, with the release of Marvel Studios’ “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings”, the parent organization said on Tuesday.
The parent company, AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc. said more than two million people watched movies at its U.S. theatres through the long weekend, marking the highest number of admissions for Labor Day weekend in the company’s history.
About 800,000 people watched movies at its European and Middle East location, it said.
“This is the very first weekend that our attendance numbers were ahead of those of the same weekend pre-pandemic, since we closed our theatres in March of 2020,” Chief Executive Adam Aron said in a statement.
Shares of the company, which were at $2 at the beginning of the year, were trading 5.8% higher at $46.58 early Tuesday afternoon.
Admissions revenues also surpassed its 2013 record for Labor Day weekend in U.S., said Aron.
According to industry estimates, Walt Disney’s “Shang-Chi” reported $90 million in sales in the U.S. and Canada.
Universal Pictures’ horror film “Candyman” also reported an estimated $13.4 million, making it the second-highest-grossing film for the weekend.
