• CEO Adam Mosseri testified for the first time before Congress last week regarding the allegations on the platform
• Instagram has not made its user number public since it reached 1 billion monthly active users mark
Instagram reached a new milestone of 2 billion monthly active users, said people familiar with the matter.
This comes at a time when the photo-sharing app is facing heat by the U.S. lawmakers for its impact on the mental health of teenagers.
CEO Adam Mosseri testified for the first time before Congress last week regarding the allegations on the platform.
Even with the controversies surrounding the platform and its parent company Meta, the platform managed to cross the 2 billion mark.
Instagram has not made its user number public since it reached 1 billion monthly active users mark in 2018. To reach the 1 billion mark, it took the platform a time period of eight years.
CNBC reported that the people familiar with the matter said Instagram reached the 2 billion mark in October, a week before Facebook changed its name to Meta.
Instagram controversy
Instagram has come under scrutiny after the Facebook whistleblower revealed the negative impact of the image-sharing platform on teenagers’ mental health.
The whistleblower disclosed that despite knowing the impact on mental health of teenagers, Facebook chose to do nothing about it.
Launched in 2010, Instagram was acquired by Facebook after two years for $1 billion.
