The latest movie of the Marvel franchise, ‘Spider-Man: No Way
Home,’ has become the first one since 2019 to cross $1 billion at the global box
office, the film's studio Sony (SNE) has said.
The film crossed the milestone 12 days after release. The
movies to gross $1 billion in less time were 2019’s ‘Avengers: Endgame’ and ‘Avengers:
Infinity War’ that made the mark in 5 days and 11 days, respectively.
Trail of vanquished villains
In the movie, Tom Holland and Zendaya as Peter Parker and MJ
leave a trail of vanquished villains from across the Marvel multiverse. It is also
the only film after the pandemic broke to make $1 billion worldwide.
The first film to reach $1 billion since ‘Star Wars: The Rise
of Skywalker,’ released in December 2019, ‘No Way Home’ is the top grossing
film of 2021 worldwide.
The film made by Sony and Disney's (DIS) Marvel Studios has
had an amazing run at the box office--especially since the world is still in
the grip of the pandemic, CNN wrote.
Record-breaking performance
The flick’s opening weekend at the North American box office
– the second largest domestic
opening of all time.
“What this represents is quite mind-boggling,” Paul
Dergarabedian, Senior Media Analyst at Comscore (SCOR), was quoted as saying by
CNN Business. "These numbers would be very impressive in the pre-pandemic
era, but for 'Spider-Man: No Way Home' to sprint to a billion dollars in this
marketplace is really hard to wrap your mind around."
He added: "The monumental achievement of 'No Way Home'
hitting this number cannot be overstated for this industry right now."
