EV maker Tesla sold record number of Chinese vehicles in December

Electric vehicle maker Tesla sold 70,847 China-made vehicles in December, according to the data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).
This is the highest monthly rate since Tesla started manufacturing in Shanghai in 2019. The December sales were almost three times compared to last year and 34% higher than November.
According to Reuters calculations, Tesla’s total sales of China-made cars in 2021 totals to at least 473,078, which is around half of 936,000 vehicles the automaker delivered globally last year.

The Shanghai factory, which makes electric Model 3 sedans and Model Y sport-utility vehicles, started delivering vehicles at the end of 2019.
In October, during the third-quarter results, Tesla said that the Shanghai plant exceeded potential annual output by 450,000 vehicles.
The EV market in China is still dominated by domestic companies such as BYD and Wuling. Tesla is the only foreign brand among the top carmakers.

Chinese EV maker Nio delivered 10,489 cars last month, a year-on-year increase of 49.7%, while Xpeng delivered 16,000 vehicles, showed CPCA data. Volkswagen said it sold more than 13,787 ID. series EV in China in December.
CPCA said passenger car sales fell 7.7% in December in China, selling 2.14 million vehicles.
