The Ukrainian state nuclear company said that all the Russian troops occupying the Chernobyl nuclear power station have left the site on Thursday.
The U.N. nuclear watchdog International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) also confirmed the Russian withdrawal, saying Russia is preparing to send a mission to the radioactive waste facilities at Chernobyl.
Russian authorities have not commented on the withdrawal yet.
Russian armed forces had taken control of Europe’s largest nuclear power facility in the second week of its invasion of Ukraine.
Even though Russia took control of the nuclear plant the country had agreed to work together with the Ukrainian military to ensure the facility’s safety as the plant’s Ukrainian staff continued to oversee the safe storage of spent nuclear fuel.
Ukraine’s nuclear agency had said the radiation at the non-functioning Chornobyl nuclear power plant has crossed control levels since Russia took over the area.
The nuclear agency said the increased radiation is due to the movement of heavy military machinery resulting in lifting the top layer of soil into the air.
On April 26, 1986, an explosion at the Chornobyl power plant resulted in the world’s worst nuclear disaster.
