Ukrainian authorities said up to 9,000 Mariupol residents may have been buried in a mass grave in Manhush.
According to the Mariupol City Council, satellite photographs taken by the US defense contractor Maxar indicate mass graves 20 times larger than a graveyard uncovered in the city of Bucha.
Manhush is a Russian-occupied town located fewer than 20 kilometers from the beleaguered port city.
In a statement, Mariupol Mayor Vadym Boychenko said: “The gravest war crime of the 21st century has been committed in Mariupol. This is the new Babyn Yar. Hitler killed Jews, Roma people, and Slavs back then. Right now, Putin is destroying the Ukrainian people.
“He has already killed tens of thousands of civilians in Mariupol. This demands a powerful reaction from the entire civilized world. We need to do whatever it takes to stop the genocide.”
Babyn Yar is a site near Kiyv, it was the location where Nazis slaughtered Ukrainian Jews during World War II.
By mid-March, public utilities had buried about 5,000 people in various parts of Mariupol and the suburbs.
According to cautious estimates, the total number of residents killed by the Russian army in Mariupol is 22,000.
