Facebook parent company Meta Platforms Inc (NASDAQ: FB) will open its first brick-and-mortar store next month, where customers can try out and buy virtual reality headsets and other gadgets as the company is trying to push its metaverse experience into the mainstream.
The 1,550-square feet Meta Store at the company’s Burlingame campus in California will open on May 9, Meta said in a statement.
“Once people experience the technology, they can gain a better appreciation for it. If we did our job right, people should leave and tell their friends,” Meta Store head Martin Gilliard said. The storewill feature demos for Quest 2 VR headset and video calling device Portal and Ray-Ban’s augmented reality (AR) glasses.
Except for the Ray-Ban glasses, other devices will be available for purchase at the physical store as well as online through a new shopping tab on meta.com, the company said.
“The Meta Store is going to help people make that connection to how our products can be the gateway to the metaverse in the future. We’re not selling the metaverse in our store, but hopefully, people will come in and walk out knowing a little bit more about how our products will help connect them to it,” Gilliard said.
Meta is investing heavily in the metaverse - a virtual space where people interact, work, and play, which can be accessed through hardware devices.
Earlier this month, the social media giant said it would start testing tools for selling digital assets within its virtual reality (VR) platform Horizon Worlds and charge a 47.5% fee from the creators, which has attracted criticism from some developers.
