Ukraine reclaims control over territory around Kharkiv
• Pentagon official said Ukraine has managed to push the Russians out about 40 kilometers to the east of Kharkiv
Ukraine's Ministry of Defense said Monday that Ukrainian soldiers have launched an attack in the country's Kharkiv area, retaking control of several communities.
Ruska Lozova, from where Russian forces bombed Ukraine's second-largest city, was among the territories regained, the ministry said in a Telegram post.
The strategically significant city is located in northeast Ukraine, barely 32 kilometers (20 miles) from the Russian border.
“Ukrainians have been doing an able job over the last 24 to 48 hours of pushing the Russians further away. And they have managed to push the Russians out about 40 kilometers to the east of Kharkiv," a senior US defense official said.
That's a good example of the stiff and formidable resistance Ukrainian forces are displaying, the US official said.
Kharkiv has been under siege since late February, and the majority of the city's civilians have evacuated.
Regarding security assistance to Ukraine, the Pentagon official said more than 70 of the 90 M-777 howitzers that the US is sending to Ukraine have arrived, “along with over 140,000 155 mm rounds that these cannons use, which is about half of the projectiles planned for delivery.”
