• Around 344 individuals have been evacuated from Mariupol's city and suburbs, President Zelenskyy says
Russia is "trying to destroy" Ukraine's surviving soldiers holed up in Mariupol's Azovstal steel complex.
“In the Mariupol area, Russian occupiers are focusing their efforts on blocking and trying to destroy Ukrainian units in the Azovstal area,” Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence said in a statement.
“With the support of aircraft, the enemy resumed the offensive to take control of the plant.”
The statement comes after a Russia announced a ceasefire set to start at the besieged facility. At the facility, hundreds of people, including the elderly and children, have taken refuge in the steelworks' network of subterranean tunnels and bunkers.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in his nightly speech that another 344 individuals have been evacuated from Mariupol's city and suburbs and are on their way to Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine.
Meanwhile, the Russian military denies the attempt to attack Mariupol's Azovstal steel complex.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has not given any new orders regarding the facility, said Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov while the prior decision to blockade the factory rather than attack, remains in effect, TASS reported.
