The attack began soon after all women, children, and the elderly were evacuated.

“As expected, after the departure of the UN column outside the Donetsk region, the occupiers began storming Azovstal,” Petro Andriushchenko said, according to a translation, CNBC quoted.

“In particular, an attempt was made to break through the bridge, which was used for the evacuation. Unsuccessful,” Andriushchenko said.

Meanwhile, the city council of Mariupol has shared a video on Telegram purporting to show a mass grave containing the dead of "hundreds" of people slain by Russian soldiers.

The mass burial was discovered in the village of Vynohradne, approximately 14 kilometers (8 miles) east of Mariupol, where Moscow-backed separatists had a parade earlier in the day.

“The occupiers celebrate Victory Day on the bones of Mariupol residents,” the council said in a telegram post.
