Sweden's ruling Social Democratic Party said that it will join the European military alliance, following Finland's announcement that it will seek North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) membership.
"The party board has at its meeting on May 15, 2022 decided that the party will work toward Sweden applying for membership in NATO," the Social Democrats said in a statement.
Sweden and Finland have been making strong efforts to join NATO since the Russian invasion began in February.
Meanwhile, Russia said if Finland and Sweden joined NATO, the US-led military alliance, then Moscow would have to deploy nuclear weapons to bolster its defense in the Baltic region of Europe.
The Social Democrats also said that nuclear weapons and permanent NATO military sites should not be stationed in Sweden.
Earlier, the White House indicated that the US will support European nations' requests to join NATO after Finnish President Sauli Niinisto and Prime Minister Sanna Marin stated that Finland must seek to join the NATO military alliance "without delay.”
