US road and transportation safety agency on Wednesday said it has opened a special crash investigation against Tesla Inc (NASDAQ: TSLA), whose Model S was involved in a crash this month in California, killing three people.
A 2022 Tesla Model S, on May 12, crashed into construction equipment in Newport Beach, California. Three people inside the vehicle were killed, while three workers near the construction site were injured, according to police.
A total of 14 crash deaths have been reported till now in 35 special crash investigations by the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) involving Tesla since 2016, including the most recent three.
The NHTSA lists the investigation case type for the Model S crash as “Advanced Driver Assistance Systems ODI.” ODI stands for the Office of Defects Investigation in the agency.
Among all the investigations, advanced driver assistance systems were suspected of being used, however, the agency has ruled out the use of Autopilot in three cases.
NHTSA, separately on Wednesday, said that in April, it had opened another special crash investigation involving a 2016 Tesla Model X in Florida that resulted in a minor injury.
Last August, NHTSA opened a formal preliminary evaluation into Tesla’s Autopilot and identified at least a dozen crashes involving Tesla models and emergency vehicles.
