Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) showed a mixed reality headset, capable of both augmented and virtual reality to its board of directors last week.
Bloomberg reported that the company’s eight-member board and Apple CEO Tim Cook convened at least four times a year, and a version of the new device was demonstrated during the latest gathering.
The report stated that engineers are currently working hard devloping the real operating system (rOS) for the device.
The Information had earlier reported that Apple board members got to demo a few prototype AR / VR devices in 2016 which were extremely early-stage devices.
The latest device will feature two 4K micro-OLED displays, 15 camera modules, powerful processors equivalent to the M-series chips, eye-tracking capabilities, hand gesture support, spatial audio, and other features. When launched, the headset is expected to cost somewhere around $3,000.
The AR/VR headset will be Apple's first major new product category since the Apple Watch came out seven years ago in 2015. Apple is expected to follow the AR/VR headset with a second-generation version and a set of augmented reality smart glasses that are going to launch sometime around 2024.
