• The global flight bookings for leisure travel rose 25% in April
Global leisure and business flights have surpassed 2019 levels for the first time since the starting of the pandemic, indicating recovery in travel demand.
According to the Mastercard Economics Institute’s third annual travel report, titled “Travel 2022: Trends & Transitions,” the cross-border travel reached pre-pandemic levels as of March.
In April, the global flight bookings for leisure travel rose 25%, compared to the same time in 2019, driven by the number of short-haul and medium-haul flights.
Meanwhile, business flight bookings topped 2019 levels at the end of March for the first time since the beginning of the pandemic.
Popular destinations
With an uptick in international travel, the US, the UK, Switzerland, Spain and The Netherlands are the top destinations for tourists globally.
However, Asian destinations were not the most preferred locations by tourists. Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia saw an increase in flights but were not among the top international travel destinations.
