The news came after President Volodymyr Zelensky and other senior Ukrainian officials have urged the US and its allies to supply the Multiple Launch Rocket System.
The HIMARS (High Mobility Artillery Rocket Weapon), a lighter wheeled device capable of firing many of the same types of ammunition as the MLRS, is another system Ukraine has requested.
However, the US and diplomatic officials told Reuters that Washington has talked to Kyiv about the risk of escalation if it strikes deep within Russia.
Meanwhile, after a failed attempt to conquer Kyiv three months into the conflict, Russia is focused on its assault in the south.
