• The production company was sued by the family of the author whose article inspired the original movie
Paramount Pictures (NASDAQ: PARA) was sued on Monday over copyright infringement for its blockbuster movie "Top Gun: Maverick."
The production company was sued by the family of the author whose article inspired the original 1986 Tom Cruise movie "Top Gun."
According to the lawsuit by Shosh and Yuval Yonay, heirs to the author Ehud Yonay, Paramount failed to reacquire the rights to the author’s 1983 article.
The Yonays seek unspecified damages from Paramount, including profits from "Top Gun: Maverick," and to block distribution of the movie or further sequels.
The movie "Top Gun: Maverick" has generated $548.6 million globally in its first 10 days of release, becoming this year's biggest box office hit.
Paramount had obtained exclusive movie rights to the article “Top Guns” before making the original movie in 1986.
Yonays allege that the copyright was reverted to them in January 2020 before the release of the movie this year.
