• German carmaker currently has North American assembly plants in Tennessee and Mexico
• Keogh declined to discuss potential locations for new plants
German automobile giant Volkswagen is “actively” looking to establish new assembly plants and battery facilities in the US, Volkswagen Group of America CEO Scott Keogh told CNBC on Wednesday.
The carmaker’s electrification efforts are currently based in Tennessee and also has an assembly plant in Mexico.
“We are actively in the process of looking at another production facility and also looking at a battery facility,” Keogh said in an interview, declining to provide details about potential locations.
Volkswagen is still discussing and evaluating its options, and no decisions have been made, CNBC reported, citing a company spokesperson.
Any new or expansions would mean a significant decision and fresh investment of billions of dollars in America and also help boost similar moves by other carmakers to increase EV production in the country – a major goal of the Biden administration.
Last month, South Korean carmaker Hyundai Motor said it would invest around $5.54 billion to build its first dedicated electric vehicle and battery manufacturing facilities in America, located outside of Savannah, Georgia, in Bryan County, and plans to produce 300,000 electric cars annually.
