- Around 90% of residential buildings, as well as 60% of private houses, have been damaged or destroyed in Mariupol
At least 1,348 people have been killed in Mariupol since the beginning of the war, making it the "deadliest place in Ukraine," said Michelle Bachelet, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.
Air strikes, tank and artillery bombardment, and small arms and light weapons employed in street warfare all contributed to the casualties. The actual civilian death toll from warfare is likely “thousands higher.”
The UN official said 90% of residential buildings, as well as up to 60% of private houses, have been damaged or destroyed. An estimated 350,000 people were displaced from the city.
“The humanitarian situation is devastating, with civilians continuing to bear the brunt of this conflict,” Bachelet said in a statement.
Meanwhile, more than 2,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been taken as prisoners of war from Mariupol since early March.
