Ukraine’s richest person Rinat Akhmetov has filed a lawsuit against Moscow at the European Court of Human Rights, claiming Russian President Vladimir Putin’s government violated his property rights in its attack on his home country.
Akhmetov is the majority owner of Metinvest, Ukraine’s largest steel producer and the owner of two large mills, including Azovstal, which is located in the port city of Mariupol that Russian forces seized last month.
Akhmetov, whose net worth is around $7 billion, has also asked the judges to issue interim measures to prevent Russia from blockading, looting, diversion and destruction of grain and steel produced by SCM’s companies.
“Evil cannot go unpunished,” he said.
“Russia’s crimes against Ukraine and our people are egregious, and those guilty of them must be held liable… This lawsuit is one of the first international legal steps against Russia to stop their ongoing crimes, destruction of the Ukrainian economy, and the plundering of Ukrainian assets.”
The suit comes after Ukraine filed the first round of submissions against Russia on Thursday at the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, seeking $80 billion in compensation from Moscow over war crimes inflicted during its invasion.
