• WHO said all women should have the right to choose when it comes to their bodies and health
World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Ghebreyesus, on Wednesday, blasted the US Supreme Court’s ruling to overturn a woman’s constitutional right to an abortion as a “set-back” for the 40-year global trend toward increased access to safe abortion.
“It is more important than ever to come together to protect women’s right to safe abortion — everywhere,” Ghebreyesus said in a media briefing.
Ghebreyesus, who has served as the director-general of the international health agency since 2017, said access to safe abortion saves lives.
He mentioned that restricting the rights hurts the women from the poorest and most marginalized communities.
“I want to reaffirm WHO’s position,” said Ghebreyesus. “All women should have the right to choose when it comes to their bodies and health. Full stop.”
Several companies in the US, including JP Morgan, Wells Fargo, and Disney, have said they will reimburse their employees who want to travel to other states for healthcare services.
