Ukrainian forces hoist flag on regained Snake Island
  • Russian soldiers evacuated from Snake Island in the Black Sea as a ‘gesture of goodwill'

The Ukrainian army claims to have regained control of the symbolic Snake Island in the Black Sea after hoisting its flag there this week following Russian soldiers' retreat.

Serhiy Bratchuk, spokesman for the Head of the Odesa Regional Military Administration on Thursday uploaded photographs on Telegram showing the Ukrainian flag on Snake Island.

Russian Soldiers have evacuated from Snake Island in the Black Sea off Ukraine's coast as a "gesture of goodwill,". Moscow took the island on the first day of the invasion, and it is located in the key maritime channels to Odesa and its neighboring ports.

Earlier, The UK Ministry of Defense said that Russia has highly likely withdrawn from Snake Island owing to the isolation of the garrison and its increasing vulnerability to Ukrainian strikes, rather than as a ‘gesture of good will’, as it has claimed.

Meanwhile, Ukraine's Special Operations Forces announced that they had finished clearing the island, destroying 30 units of enemy equipment in the process.
