Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has suspended Ukraine's security chief and prosecutor general.
On Sunday, it was revealed that Prosecutor General Irina Venediktova and Ukraine's Security ServiceHead Ivan Bakanov had been terminated after Zelenskyy said that there had been instances of treason identified in both government organizations.
“As of today, 651 criminal proceedings have been registered regarding treason and collaboration activities of employees of prosecutor's offices, pretrial investigation bodies, and other law enforcement agencies,” Zelenskyy said in his video address. “In 198 criminal proceedings, relevant persons were notified of suspicion.”
“In particular, more than 60 employees of the prosecutor's office and the Security Service of Ukraine remained in the occupied territory and are working against our state,” he said.
The Ukrainian leader further said such a slew of crimes against the foundations of the state's national security, as well as the links discovered between Ukrainian security forces personnel and Russian special services, raise severe concerns among the relevant leadership.
