Transport ministry of China tightened rules for online ride-hailing firms on Friday regarding sharing and storing data.
This comes a day after Didi Global was fined $1.2 billion for illegally collecting and processing data.
In 2018, the Chinese government had announced similar rules to have control over the data collected by these companies.
According to the updates rules, companies cannot use data for commercial purposes and the data must be stored for at least two years in China, compared to six months previously, reported Reuters.
The collected data can also not be exported or shown to outside entities without regulatory authorisation.
