Finland registered a record number of asylum applicants in the aftermath of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, exceeding the previous high established during the 2015 migrant crisis.
“By August 4, those fleeing Ukraine due to the Russian military attack had submitted 35,074 applications for temporary protection,” the Finnish Immigration Service said in a statement.
More than 37,000 persons are presently registered in the receiving system, "which is more than ever before," according to the Finnish immigration agency. The statement said one-third of those fleeing are youngsters.
The Finnish Immigration Service has issued 33,480 temporary protection orders. As a result, nearly 95% of applicants have received a decision on their application.
According to the most recent UNHCR data, more than 6.3 million refugees have fled Ukraine for Europe.
