Manchester United owner Glazer family considering selling stake in English soccer club
• Owners have held preliminary talks on new investment
Manchester United PLC (NYSE: MANU), owner the Glazer family, would consider selling a minority stake in the English soccer club, Bloomberg reported on Wednesday, citing people familiar with the matter.
The news comes hours after Tesla Inc (NASDAQ: TSLA) CEO Elon Musk tweeted that he would buy the club.
However, later the billionaire tweeted, “No, this is a long-running joke on Twitter. I’m not buying any sports teams,” responding to a Twitter user asking if he was serious about buying the club.
The American Glazer family have held some preliminary discussions about the possibility of bringing in a new investor, the report said, as pressure mounts on their ownership of the historic soccer club.
The owner is not yet ready to cede control of ManU, which could be valued at about £5 billion ($6 billion), Bloomberg reported.
Discussions are ongoing, and there’s no certainty that the Glazers will choose to sell a stake in the club.
Shares of Manchester United jumped as much as 7.5% in New York on Wednesday.
