Rekor Systems, Tomorrow.io, and Waze Partner to Mitigate Hurricane Impacts in Florida and North Carolina
New critical data sets will leverage AI to predict, in real-time, elevated roadway risks and alert motorists to potentially dangerous weather and traffic conditions
COLUMBIA, MD / ACCESSWIRE / September 20, 2022 / Rekor Systems, Inc., (NASDAQ: REKR) ("Rekor" or the "Company"), a global AI technology company with a mission to provide insights that build safer, smarter, and more efficient cities around the world through intelligent infrastructure, today announced the deployment of its partnership with Tomorrow.io, the global leader in advanced weather technology, and Waze, the world's largest community-based traffic and navigation app. Together, Rekor, Tomorrow.io and Waze will provide two East Coast states that face above-normal hurricane risk, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) outlook for the 2022 Atlantic hurricane season, with powerful AI data that will improve regional preparedness planning and response to severe weather conditions. The Company's announcement comes in the wake of recent investment made by the USDOT to combat the effects of climate change and address the growing costs of extreme weather events negatively impacting communities.
High winds, storm surges, tidal flooding, heavy rains, and flash flooding pose serious threats to road safety and traffic management in both states. They face dangerous roadway conditions and have chosen to use AI and advanced technology in response to increasing climate threats by expanding their use of Rekor digital infrastructure technology. This includes new critical data sets that leverage AI to predict, in real time, elevated roadway risks and alert motorists to potentially dangerous weather and traffic conditions from Tomorrow.io. Rekor will incorporate connected vehicle data for better crash risk analysis and evacuation monitoring, while two public agencies will alert motorists via Waze. This real-time added visibility into the road network consequently improves emergency response plans and helps get citizens to safety.
"Our mission is to combine the best technologies and data sets available across multiple infrastructure disciplines to create a truly unified toolkit that produces actionable insights that agencies can utilize to unlock the full potential of live data and AI within transportation management. Transportation management has public safety and emergency response at its core, and with a growing number of natural disasters linked to climate change, it is critical that we have the best real-time weather data and instant alerting available to enable smarter and safer technologies for citizens," said Paul Zamsky, VP of Global Partnerships and Alliances, Rekor.
Both regions have already deployed Rekor's Transportation Management Platform and have been responding to accidents and debris on the road leveraging the proprietary Rekor AI and machine learning algorithms. Now with the addition of Tomorrow.io, the traffic management centers will add new AI information to track severe winds, storm surges, tides, flooding, rain intensity and accumulation. In addition, the partners and the agencies will collaborate to develop and implement standard operating procedures to fully utilize this combined data. The project will run through the duration of the year with a focus on the coastal roadways. It will be a cross-agency collaboration between traffic management and emergency management operations.
