Domestic outmigration from some urban counties slows

The U.S. Census Bureau has reported that the pattern of domestic migration that COVID-19 created has started reversing.

The pandemic had accelerated outmigration from large urban areas in the Northeast with small rural counties gaining the population.

The bureau’s Vintage 2022 population estimate that provides a snapshot of changes in domestic migration says parts of the country have begun showing signs of a rebound.

In 2019, the year before the pandemic hit the United States, smaller counties with fewer than 30,000 people lost population through net domestic migration, the report says. But, during the pandemic’s peak, between 2020 and 2021, this flipped, and these least populous counties gained people through domestic migration. 

However, in 2022, these smaller counties experienced smaller population bumps from domestic migration.
