A senior Taliban delegation is visiting western Afghanistan's Herat province in the aftermath of the powerful earthquake that killed at least 2,000 people and flattened entire villages

A Taliban delegation is visiting the Herat province in Afghanistan's western region, which was hit by a powerful earthquake that took the lives of at least 2,000 people over the weekend.

The 6.3-magnitude quake hit a densely populated area in Herat. It was followed by several powerful aftershocks. The quake was the deadliest to hit the Asian country in two decades.

The team headed by the Taliban-appointed deputy prime minister of economic affairs Abdul Ghani Baradar will visit the quake-hit region to supervise "immediate relief assistance" and make possible "equitable and accurate distribution of aid," a statement from Kabul said.

The Associated Press reported from Islamabad: The quake also trapped hundreds and people have been digging with their bare hands and shovels to pull victims — both dead and alive — from under the rubble. Authorities said Monday they were still waiting for an update on the latest casualties from Herat.
