Israel strikes neighborhood after neighborhood in Gaza as war appears set to escalate
Residents of the Gaza Strip scrambled to find safety Wednesday as Israeli warplanes hammered neighborhood after neighborhood in the tiny coastal enclave in retaliation for the deadly weekend attack by Hamas militants
Israel is continuing its relentless bombing of the Gaza Strip to avenge a Hamas attack that killed hundreds over the weekend. On Wednesday, Tel Aviv's warplanes pounded Gaza neighborhoods in the densely populated Palestinian enclave controlled by Hamas militants amid speculation that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government may launch a ground attack to dislodge Hamas militants.
Gaza residents fled to U.N. relief camps opened in schools while humanitarian groups sought the creation of safe corridors to evacuate the wounded to hospitals that are overcrowded.
The Associated Press adds from Jerusalem: Israel has stopped entry of food, fuel and medicine into Gaza, and the sole remaining access from Egypt shut down Tuesday after airstrikes hit near the border crossing.
The war, which has claimed at least 2,100 lives on both sides, is expected to escalate.
