The United States Senate has approved $95 billion in foreign aid for Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan following months of debate and various attempted filibusters. The bill is now on the verge of passing and being signed by President Joe Biden. Biden has maintained his support for both Ukraine and Israel in their ongoing conflicts despite opposition from both sides of the aisle. Republicans and close supporters of former President Trump have opposed increased spending on the war in Ukraine, as well as Democrats on the left who oppose further support of Israel as the war between Israel and Hamas worsens an already bad humanitarian situation within the region.
Included within the various pieces of aid are several amendments that resolve various debates connected to the foreign aid. This includes earmarking several million for humanitarian assistance for the Gaza region, included in Israel's $26 billion in military aid.
The so-called TikTok Ban bill would see the United States either force a sale of the popular social media app or see it become unavailable within the United States. TikTok has reported that there are 170 million users of its app within the United States, and the Chinese parent company, Bytedance, has refused to cooperate with any forced sale.
Additionally, Republicans successfully lobbied that seized Russian assets, including property belonging to sanctioned oligarchs, can be sold to secure additional funding for military aid in Ukraine.
