Atalanta beat undefeated Bayer Leverkusen to win Europa League
Atalanta defeated invisible Budesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen to lift first major trophy in club history
In Dublin, Ireland Italian underdog Atalanta manged to beat the unbeaten German side Bayer Leverkusen 3-0 thanks to a hat trick from Ademola Lookman, the first hat trick of his carrer and the first in a Europa Leauge final.
Bayer Levekusen this season became the first side to Bundsliga side to finish the season undeafted going 28-6-0 to win thier first domestic leauge title as well as going 42-9-0 in all other compitiones. Becoming the only side in europe this season without a loss. Meanwhile Atalanta finished 5th in Serie A and also reached the Coppa Italia final, losing to Juventus.
Atalanta have been underdogs in severale of thier ties going into the final beating the likes of Liverpool and Marsellie who were both favoured against the italian side. Atalantas win against Leverkusen is the first loss for the club in nearly a calender year. Though this will have a chance at additonall silverware on May 25th when they will compete against FC Kaiserslautern in the DFB-Pokal final.
The win also means that Atalanta will have thier first top flight major trophy in the clubs 116 year history as well as the first trophy for manger Gian Pero Gasperini who took charge of the Bergamo side in 2016 and had previously lead the team to qualify for the UEFA Champions Leauge for the first time in team history.
