Unemployment Rises in Majority of U.S. Metropolitan Areas in December 2024

Jobless rates increase in 266 out of 389 metropolitan areas
Unemployment rates increased in 266 of the 389 metropolitan areas in the U.S. compared to the previous year. This was revealed in a recent report by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, which highlighted that only 95 areas saw a decline in unemployment rates, while 28 remained unchanged. The national unemployment rate also rose, reaching 3.8 percent from last year's 3.5 percent.

Rapid City, SD, reported the lowest unemployment rate at 1.8 percent. In contrast, El Centro, CA, recorded the highest with a dramatic 17.8 percent. Among the larger metropolitan areas with populations over one million, Minneapolis-St. Paul-Bloomington, MN-WI, boasted the lowest unemployment rate at 2.5 percent, whereas Las Vegas-Henderson-Paradise, NV, had the highest at 5.9 percent.
Employment Shifts in Metropolitan Areas
Nonfarm payroll employment increased over the year in 36 metropolitan regions, while the most significant gains were observed in New York-Newark-Jersey City, NY-NJ-PA; Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington, TX; and Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land, TX. However, employment remained largely unchanged in 353 metropolitan areas.
Metropolitan Division Employment Trends
The New York-Jersey City-White Plains, NY-NJ, and Dallas-Plano-Irving, TX divisions showed substantial employment increases. Yet, the majority of the divisions reported stagnant employment figures, mirroring the broader national trend of minimal job growth.
