• Twitter would start testing the idea in the coming months
Social media platform Twitter (NYSE: TWTR) has confirmed that it is working on a feature that will allow users to edit their tweets after they have been posted.
The confirmation comes after Tesla CEO Elon Musk asked his followers in a Twitter poll whether they wanted the feature.
The social media firm’s communications team tweeted: “Now that everyone is asking… yes, we’ve been working on an edit feature since last year! No, we didn’t get the idea from a poll.”
Twitter said it would start testing the idea in the coming months.
On Tuesday, Musk asked users in a Twitter poll if they wanted an edit button on the platform. To this, Twitter CEO Parag Agarwal wrote, “The consequences of this poll will be important. Please vote carefully.”
After around 4.2 million votes, 73.5% of users voted yes, while 26.5% voted no.
Jay Sullivan, the company’s vice president of consumer product, said it had been “the most requested Twitter feature for many years” in a thread on Tuesday.
Currently, regular users cannot edit a tweet. They have to delete the tweet and resend it, which can limit the number of users who see the tweet.
Only subscribers to Twitter Blue, a $3 per month subscription, have access to a feature that gives users a few seconds to correct a tweet before it’s sent to the public.
