The United States on Wednesday announced a slew of sanctions against Russia targeting Russian President Vladimir Putin’s daughters and banning Americans from investing in the country.
The US sanctioned Putin’s two daughters, Katerina Tikhonova and Mariya Putina, along with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov's wife and daughter, and senior members of Russia's security council.
The sanctions also targeted largest banks of Russia including Sberbank, which holds one-third of the country’s banking assets, and country’s fourth largest financial institute, Alfabank. Energy purchases, though, will be exempted from the sanctions.
The sanctions come after Ukraine’s Zelensky accused Russia of civilian killing in towns surrounding Kyiv, including Bucha, Irpin, and Hostomel and warned that more atrocities than Bucha are expected to be discovered in Borodyanka, a city near Kyiv.
US President Joe Biden referred to the killings in Bucha as “major war crimes” committed by Russia.
"Responsible nations have to come together to hold these perpetrators accountable," US President Joe Biden said, reported Reuters.
"And together with our allies and our partners, we're going to keep raising economic costs and ratchet up the pain for Putin."
Britain also froze Sberbank’s assets and aims to ban Russian coal imports by the end of this year.
