Apple employees at the iPhone manufacturer's high-profile Grand Central Terminal store want workers to be paid at least $30 per hour.
The group which had started working towards unionizing earlier this year stated their request on the website of their group Fruit Stand Workers United on Monday
The group launched its website over the weekend. They wrote, “For pay, we seek a minimum of $30 for all workers, built upon a matrix based on role, tenure, and performance.”
On Saturday, The Washington Post reported that the market and experience determined the salary of Apple employees. It could vary from $17 to more than $30 per hour, depending on the two factors.
“For benefits, we seek more robust changes, like increased tuition reimbursement, faster accrued and more vacation time, and better retirement options, including higher match rates for 401(k) and enrollment into pension plans,” the organizers said on their website.
“For health and safety, we look to conduct research into security protocols with customer interactions, and research into track dust, health effects from building materials, and noise pollution at Grand Central.”
The pandemic has pushed workplace activism across the country. Recently President Joe Biden expressed his support for organized labor on Wednesday by hailing the victory of union backers at Amazon, in New York’s Staten Island.
