• The energy giant warns both nations that if they ship gas meant for other European countries, the amount of gas sent will be reduced
Gazprom, Russia's state-owned energy corporation said it has stopped supplying gas to Bulgargaz in Bulgaria and PGNiG in Poland because both businesses failed to pay for gas in roubles.
“Gazprom Export has notified Bulgargaz and PGNiG of the suspension of gas supplies from April 27 until payment is made under the procedure established by the decree,” Gazprom said in a statement.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has asked that nations who pay for Russian gas imports in Euros or Dollars need to create accounts with Gazprombank and pay in Rubles.
The energy corporation also warned the two nations that if they shipon gas meant for other European consumers, the amount of gas sent to Europe will be reduced.
Poland and Bulgaria have been notified in advance about the halt, according to Gazprom.
“Payments for gas supplied from April 1 must be made in roubles using the new payments details, about which the counterparties were informed in a timely manner,” the energy giant said on Wednesday.
PGNiG said that it will make efforts to restore gas flow under the Yamal contract, which will expire at the end of 2022 and any interruption in deliveries will be considered a breach of the contract.
