• The remarks came after Russia destroyed a large consignment of Western-supplied weaponry
Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned that Western nations' interference in Ukraine will be countered with a "lightning-fast" military reaction.
Speaking to lawmakers in St Petersburg, Putin said, “If someone intends to interfere in what is going on from the outside, they must know that constitutes an unacceptable strategic threat to Russia.”
"They must know that our response to counter-strikes will be lightning-fast," he said.
Putin's statement came after Russia claimed on Wednesday that it had launched a missile attack in southern Ukraine, destroying a large consignment of Western-supplied weaponry.
“We have all the tools for this that no one else can boast of having,” the Russian President said. “We won’t boast about it: We’ll use them if needed and I want everyone to know that. We have already taken all the decisions on this.”
Intercontinental ballistic missile
The Russian president presided over the successful test of the Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile.
According to the US Congressional Research Service, the missile, which has 10 or more warheads, was fired from Plesetsk in the northwest and hit dummy targets on the Kamchatka Peninsula in the east last week.
Putin praised the test launch in a televised remark to his soldiers and said "this truly unique weapon will strengthen the combat potential of our armed forces, reliably ensure the security of Russia from external threats, and make those who - in the heat of aggressive rhetoric - try to threaten our country think twice.”
