US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has returned to Washington after a visit to Ukraine to sign legislation that will make it easier to transfer help to Kyiv.
President Joe Biden's legislation, which was enacted by Congress last week, would modernize a World War II-era military lend-lease law and cut red tape in the aid delivery process to Ukraine.
"In 1941, America created Lend-Lease to bolster the defense of democracy from dictatorship."
“Today, I signed a bill reviving this program to help the people of Ukraine fight for freedom. And as we reaffirmed to @ZelenskyyUa in Kyiv, we will be with them until the battle is won,” Pelosi said in a tweet.
It is believed that Biden will sign it into law.
In the Bill enrollment ceremony for the Lend-Lease Act of 2022, Pelosi said, “the legislation establishing the Lend-Lease initiative to help the people of Ukraine and the people of Eastern Europe fight for democracy. We’re very proud of this legislation, which will now go to the President for his signature.”
Earlier, the US passed legislation to terminate normal trade relations with Russia, as well as prohibit Russia from purchasing U.S. oil and its prior $13.6 billion deal.
