“And it is no coincidence that the new Ukraine Democracy Defense Lend-Lease Act was signed on May 9,” Zelenskyy said in his nightly address. “I am personally grateful to President Biden for this support, for this decision, and such symbolism.”
Zelenskyy also thanks the US for the $40 billion aid package agreed by the House of Representatives yesterday.
What is Lend-Lease Act?
The Lend-Lease Act of 1941 gave the US government the authority to "lend and lease" war supplies to any country that was actively involved in a military conflict.
The act is officially named "an act to promote the defense of the United States," and it was signed by former US President Franklin D. Roosevelt
With Biden's signature, the legislation takes effect 81 years after it was first enacted to overthrow Nazi tyrant Adolf Hitler.
The current legislation is a modified version of the one that safeguarded Britain's and later other Allies' access to weaponry during WWII.
