At a joint press conference in Tokyo, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, European Council President Charles Michel, and Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Kishida said they will continue to discuss how to maximize their collaboration to combat Russia in sectors such as energy.
“We welcome the increasingly strong stance Japan is taking against Russia,” von der Leyen said at the start of the meeting.
Japan said earlier this week that it will stop using Russian oil, following the footsteps of its Group of Seven allies, with imports gradually phased out to minimize negative impacts on people's livelihoods and companies.
The two parties decided to form cooperation to collaborate on creating digital technologies, diversifying and improving the supply chain for resources like semiconductors, and collaborating on infrastructure.
