• UK has 190 cases with 183 confirmed in England
The World Health Organization on Wednesday confirmed more than 550 monkeypox cases across 30 countries as the virus continues to spread across the globe.
Rosamund Lewis, WHO’s monkeypox technical lead, said, “We actually have today a count of over 550 confirmed cases in 30 countries across four of WHO's six regions.”
“What we're seeing now is really quite different. We're seeing cases all appearing in a relatively short period of time. We're seeing that in a few days, in a couple of weeks, we're seeing over 500 cases. This is different. This has not been seen before,” she said.
The UK currently has 190 — the highest number reported for any country — with 183 confirmed cases in England.
“The risk to the general public from monkeypox is still low, but it’s important that we work to limit the virus being passed on,” said Ruth Milton, MD, senior medical advisor at the United Kingdom Health Security Agency, in a statement on Wednesday.
