The US State Department imposes visa restrictions on 100 regime officials and their associates due to their role in undermining or harming democratic institutions or hindering the transition to democracy in Belarus.
“When it was clear the election had been stolen by the Lukashenka regime, the Belarusian people bravely took to the streets, with reports of hundreds of thousands of people amassing to peacefully demand free and fair elections and a democratic transition,” Secretary of State Antony Blinken wrote in a statement.
“The Belarusian people have demonstrated remarkable resilience in sustaining the pro-democracy movement for two years at a great personal sacrifice,” he wrote.
Alexander Lukashenka, an ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, has previously declared that Belarus will help Russian soldiers in its special military operation in Ukraine.
