UN chief urges Russia not to turn off Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant

  • Ukrainian energy company said Moscow intended to reduce the amount of power generated at the nuclear plant

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, which is seized by Russia, shouldn't be disconnected from the Ukrainian grid.

“Obviously the electricity from Zaporizhzhia is Ukrainian electricity … This principle must be fully respected,” he said during a visit to Odesa.

Energoatom, a Ukrainian energy company, earlier on Friday claimed that Moscow intended to reduce the amount of power generated at the nuclear facility.

Meanwhile, the demilitarisation of the territory surrounding the Russian-controlled Zaporizhzhia nuclear power station in Ukraine suggested by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, was rejected by Russia's foreign ministry because it would make the facility "more vulnerable."
