The Federal Reserve’s third interest rate cut of the year will likely have consequences for debt, savings, auto loans, mortgages and other forms of borrowing by consumers and businesses

The Federal Reserve's apparent compulsion to reduce the frequency of rate cuts in 2025 after Wednesday's third successive interest rate cut of the year will likely affect debt, savings, auto loans, mortgages, and other forms of borrowing by consumers and businesses, a report of the Associated Press report says. The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) cut the interest rate in September after 12 meetings went without touching the rate. The authorities have been trying to muzzle unemployment closer to the target rate of 2 percent.

But the inflation pressures are still elevated amidst concerns that uncertainties over President-elect Donald Trump's likely policies could fuel inflation. Fed chair Jerome Powell indicated Wednesday that the regulators are likely to cut rates more gradually in 2025 than it had projected three months ago. The policymakers now envision two rate cuts next year, not the four they predicted back in September, according to AP.

A result of the uncertainty over the future of Fed rates is that the borrowers who have been hoping for loans at much lower rates could be disappointed. Loan rates may barely budge if the Fed sticks with its plan to cut its key short-term rate only twice next year.

Fed could adopt wait and watch approach
