US Unemployment Insurance Weekly Claims Edge Up to 219,000

Seasonally adjusted jobless claims increase by 5,000 for week ending Feb 15
Unadjusted unemployment weekly claims in the United States increased slightly by 5,0000 to 219,000 for the week ending February 15, on top of the previous week’s revised figure of 214,000, a new report says.
The 4-week moving average was 215,250, a drop of 1,000 from the previous week's revised average of 216,250, the report from the Department of Labor said.

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 1.2% for the week ending February 8, the same as the previous week's unrevised rate, the report said. The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending February 8 was 1,869,000, up by 24,000 from the previous week's revised level. The previous week's level was revised down by 5,000 from 1,850,000 to 1,845,000.

The 4-week moving average for seasonally adjusted unemployment was 1,862,500, a decrease of 7,750 from the previous week's revised average. The previous week's average was revised down by 1,250 from 1,871,500 to 1,870,250.
The unadjusted advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, was 222,627 in the week ending February 15, a drop of 10,118 from the previous week. The seasonal factors was expected to cause a decrease of 15,416 (or -6.6 percent) from the previous week. There were 199,337 initial claims in the comparable week in 2024.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.4 percent during the week ending February 8, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted level of insured unemployment in state programs totaled 2,193,878, an increase of 6,054 (or 0.3%) from the preceding week. The seasonal factors had expected a decrease of 22,136 (or -1%) from the previous week. A year earlier the rate was 1.4% and the volume was 2,092,801.
Highest increase in California
California witnessed the largest increase in initial claims for the week ending February 8 at 1,161, followed by Texas (861), Florida (816), Washington (640), and Virginia (596). New York at -3,013 claims reported the largest decrease followed by Pennsylvania (-2,944), Wisconsin (-1,549), Ohio (-1,095), and Illinois (-975).
New Jersey and Rhode Island reported the highest insured unemployment rate in the week ending February 1 at 2.9% followed by Minnesota (2.5%), California, Massachusetts, and Washington (2.4%), Illinois and Montana (2.3%), and Michigan and Pennsylvania (2%).
