Metropolitan Areas Unemployment Rates Under Scanner Amid Recession Fears

January unemployment figures expected to remain steady from December

U.S. metro area unemployment is expected to remain steady in most locations in January, experts say. The nation is struggling to live down the impact of tariff wars that President Donald Trump has triggered, and recession fears are looming.

In December 2024, unemployment rates inched higher in December than a year earlier in 266 of the 389 metropolitan areas, edged lower in 95 areas, and unchanged in 28 areas, according to a U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics report. The jobless rate was less than 3% in 85 areas and at least 8% in 8 areas. 

Nonfarm payroll employment increased over the year in 36 metropolitan areas and was unchanged in 353 areas. The national unemployment rate in December was 3.8%, not seasonally adjusted, up from 3.5% a year earlier.

Jobless rates are expected to increase in more areas in January and more areas are likely to see sharper increases than in December.
