• ‘I anticipate that we will be in Lviv and then head to Kyiv subject to the president’s final decision,’ says US Secretary of State
Members of the US embassy flew to Lviv to meet with key partners, including the Ukrainian foreign ministry, according to a tweet from the US embassy in Ukraine.
“The visit was a first step ahead of more regular travel in the immediate future. Preparations are underway to resume Kyiv operations as soon as possible,” the tweet said.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken earlier said that American ambassadors will return to Ukraine in the next few days and the US Embassy in Kyiv would open in the coming weeks.
“We are sending diplomats back to Ukraine this week and they will begin to assess how we can most effectively and securely reopen the embassy in Kyiv. And without going into too much detail in this setting, I anticipate that we will be in Lviv and then head to Kyiv subject to the president’s final decision,” Blinken said during testimony before the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations.
The Biden administration said in February that its embassy in Kyiv would be shutting down and shifting activities abroad.
Later in February, the State Department said that its core team in Lviv has relocated to Poland.
