UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and his staff were taken aback by the proximity of Russian attacks that targeted central Kyiv but all were safe, a UN spokesperson said.
"It is a war zone but, shockingly, it happened close to us," Saviano Abreu, spokesman for the UN's humanitarian office told Al Jazeera, without saying how close they were to the point of impact.
Russia's strike happened about an hour after President Zelenskyy held a press conference with UN Secretary-General Guterres, who saw some of the wreckage in and around Kyiv and denounced the attacks on civilians.
President Zelenskyy condemned Russian assaults near the UN Secretary-General.
Zelenskyy said in his daily video message, “today, immediately after the end of our talks in Kyiv, Russian missiles flew into the city. Five missiles.”
“And this says a lot about Russia's true attitude to global institutions. About the efforts of the Russian leadership to humiliate the UN and everything that the Organization represents. Therefore, it requires a strong response,” Ukraine’s President said.
