The registration process helps ICRC to trace person and assist them in staying in touch with their family
Hundreds of Ukrainian prisoners of war (POWs) have left the Azovstal steel complex in Mariupol, said the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).
The ICRC assisted the registration procedure by having the individual fill out a form containing personal information such as name, date of birth, and closest family member.
The ICRC may use this information to track person who have been captured and assist them in staying in touch with their families.
“The ICRC must have immediate access to all POWs in all places where they are held,” it said in a statement. “The ICRC must be allowed to interview prisoners of war without witnesses, and the duration and frequency of these visits should not be unduly restricted.”
According to the Geneva-based humanitarian organization, the combatants were not taken to "the places where they are held."
